Marcel Ostertag studied at the prestigious Central Saint Martins College in London, establishing his own clothing label in 2006. His creations are manufactured exclusively in Germany and are inspired by the tension between tradition and modernity.
‘Meet me in Scotland Darling’ is an exploration of traditional Scottish garments and tartans, enlivened by the modern metallic colour palette of rich purples, greens and blues. Known for its jagged coastlines and brooding shadowy oceans, Scotland has a rich mythology surrounding the sea. Half of Ostertag’s collection evokes images of mermaids and sparkling mystical sea creatures, while the other half remains more firmly grounded in conventional Scottish heritage.
Ostertag captures then reinvents the line of the Scottish tartan, using it as a unifying motif to link the opposing halves of his collection together. Working with fashion classics, such as the trench coat, Ostertag understands how to manipulate the classic garment into something sublime and dramatic.
Taking to the runway at the end of his show dressed in his own designs complete with high heels and a full beard, Ostertag revelled in the whoops and cheers of a highly appreciative audience.
