Still on view until 3rd May 2015, the exhibition ‘Drawing Fashion – Masterpieces of a Century’ presents close to 200 original artworks compiled from the grand personal selection of fashion illustration connoisseur Joëlle Chariau at the Hamburg Museum for Art and Industry. Chariau, who’s running her own gallery Galerie Bartsch & Chariau in Munich, has been exploring and reflecting on the craft and its changing tides and importance for over 30 years, in the process drawing a conclusive picture of fashion illustration as an art form truly in its own right across the seven sections of the exhibition. From fashion illustration as documentation of certain eras (the 1910s and 1920s) to serving as the sole, most prominent tool of fashion and garment representation in the ‘50s and ‘60s, represented by the great René Gruau or Antonio Lopez. With the onset of photography, celebrated for its more immediate depiction of fashion, illustration changed its function rivalling the domineering lens with the pens and brushes of Mats Gustafson, François Berthoud or Aurore de La Morinerie.
At the heart of all stand the creations of some of fashion’s biggest designers including Christian Dior, Alexander McQueen or Coco Chanel. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. By extension, one might argue, these illustrations are nothing short of priceless.
