Based in Minneapolis, illustrator Mia Calderone has studied at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and the Bauhaus University in Germany, where Berlin’s simplicity and casual modernity sparked her creativity. Working heavily with cultural and religious connotations of the female form, her strict Catholic upbringing influences her work; drawing inspiration from traditional etchings and Catholic architecture.
Being raised in São Paulo and moving to the United States in her adolescence, she feels that she is culturally divided, reflecting this in her work through its lack of cultural context. Her illustrations are done exclusively in black and white ink due to her being colourblind, which only seems to make them more delicate and detailed.
Mia has produced original artwork for DASH Magazine’s upcoming Autumn / Winter 2014 issue, scheduled for release in September.
