This is a portrait of one of my dolls – you might know I’m also a doll maker. I made her with a selection of antique lace, which gave new life to these pieces of fabric. Although the sentence ‘Always In Style’ is kind of awful, there’s a certain truth, maybe even hope to it. Classic styles and materials that have proven their value can be inspiring because, in this world of mass production, it’s good to treasure clothing and materials, and wear them often or re-use them, simply because there’s already so much in this world. The Dutch King’s wife recently wore a dress from her mother-in-law, the former Dutch Queen – she looked fantastic. I applaud her guts and admire her for this social statement. Clothing is not made to be worn once, but to be enjoyed and treasured, like my doll.
