Inspired by the dystopian regime of George Orwell’s futuristic novel ‘1984’, the students of London College of Fashion demonstrated their ability, attitude and flair through an exhibition entitled ‘Watched’ on the 26th November 2014. Taking the concepts of surveillance, totalitarianism and uniformity and transferring them to the catwalk, students Xinyi Shu and Ricardo Suazo Pozo displayed their designs with panache. The two young designers successfully mirrored our society’s obsession with digital information and self-recording through their bold prints, daring shapes and ambitious structures.
Ricardo Suazo Pozo chose to explore sharp geometric garments in bold bright tones to mirror his appreciation of transient beauty. His debut capsule collection combines colours and silhouettes that mix the intensity of the present with the faded colour of memory. Xinyi drew her inspiration from Chinese calligraphy and the collection explores Taoist mysticism: that reality is not a succession of separate moments or an infinite number of separate things, but a seamless web of external changes. The end result is a collection that combines structure with free-flowing pieces.
