One can always count on Japanese label Anrealage to put some sort of tech-fused garments onto the runway during Paris Fashion Week, and of course they managed to do so again for designer Kunihiko Morinaga’s Autumn/Winter 2016 runway presentation. Having teamed up with the computer programmer Toru Urakawa, they created a series of black-and-grey fabric patterns that mimicked the static on old analogue televisions. But what came at the end of the runway, when the models walked through a plastic box, was a showcase of ingenuity: those patterns flickered, changed and morphed into floral motifs. Once more, Morinaga’s inventiveness combined technology with innovative tailoring, producing wrap coats with large shoulders in addition to a range of smart-looking grey separates; a true indication to both his show-stopping abilities and an understanding that these garments would look well enough on their own while being worn in the outside world.
