London’s Barbican currently showcases seminal designer Jean Paul Gaultier‘s creations, inspirations and collaborations in an exhibition titled ‘The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk’. Featuring about 165 couture items, film costumes and performance pieces – e.g. the iconic conical bra Madonna wore for her 1990 ‘Blonde Ambition’ tour – and with an expanded Muses section featuring, amongst others, newly commissioned portraits of musicians, models and entertainers who have inspired the designer throughout his career, such as Kate Moss as Dita Von Tease, the appeal of the exhibition expands beyond the realm of die-hard fashion aficionados. As the French couturier’s first major exhibition, this is most definitely a must-see.
