“Work is instinctive and led by the enjoyment of the process,” is the creative motto Poppy Gooderick lives by. After doing her BA in fashion at the University of The Creative Arts, Gooderick went on to gain experience at Dazed & Confused, Fyodor Golan and Julien Macdonald. Her latest collection, titled ‘Displacement’, is influenced by artist Gordon Matta-Clarke’s work paired with a nostalgic view of a young Kate Moss. Matta-Clarke’s work looks at buildings, how they’re technically constructed and the elements that are often missed at first glance. Even the textiles that the designer used, such as silk organza and mesh mixed with a rough application of paint, reference the bare walls and hidden spaces in Matta-Clarke’s work. This is what pushes Gooderick to deconstruct, cut and slice her pieces in half. “It is important to me that the spirit of the woman comes through strongly in each collection, and as always I wanted to maintain a level of femininity within androgynous garments by hinting at the body being revealed behind sheer layers of fabric,” says Gooderick. She invites the wearer to look a little closer in order to understand it.
