Samantha McCoach is proof that one should pursue what one knows well. The designer came from a kilt-making family, so it’s only natural for her to go back to her heritage yet she still brings a modern edge to her designs. Her grandmother, a traditional kilt-maker in Scotland for over 40 years, allowed McCoach to see up-close the techniques in tailoring wardrobe staples from traditional Scottish tartan. Finally, out of pure love for tartan, Le Kilt was born. The name is a cheeky homage to the ’80s Soho Club as well as the chicness of the garment itself. Even though there is a nostalgia to the kilt; the preservation of traditional Scottish technique is key to its core, it never feels anything but now. No wonder Susie Lau is one of her many fans.
