UAL’s London College of Fashion teams up with Cass Art to present the annual DRAW FASHION award that was open to 5,000 students.

The competition celebrates the art of drawing, the analytical skills involved, and the emotions that come across through it. The aim of it is to stimulate students to explore this art form through observation, abstract thinking, as well as juxtaposing the traditional against digital technologies.

Rob Phillips, Creative Director, School of Design & Technology, London College of Fashion, UAL said: “Through illustration we can move design; personify style, mood, identity and feeling; make a statement; progress traditions and construct new worlds to push fashion forward.”

DRAW FASHION is supported by the UK’s leading independent art supplies retailer, Cass Art, who have made it a point to give high quality drawing materials to artists from the ages of 3 to 103 over the course of the last few decades . Cass Art have generously provided a prize fund of £1000 worth of art materials for the overall winner.

Mark Cass, CEO of Cass Art said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating the act of drawing with DRAW FASHION because drawing really is at the core of all art-making. Here at Cass Art we strive to put a quality pen or pencil in the hands of everyone because we believe that drawing is integral to all the creative disciplines; any mark, line or sketch can be the start of something great.”

From the first 190 submissions, the entries were narrowed down to 50 who showcased their work to a renowed panel of judges including Richard Kilroy, (Illustrator and Editor of Decoy magazine), Cary Kwok (Artist), Martha Zmpounou (Artist), Sue Dray (Fashion Illustrator), Tony Glenville (Creative Director, London College of Fashion, UAL), Charlotte Hodes (Artist), Louise Naunton Morgan (Stinsensqueeze Design Studio) and Chaired by Rob Phillips (Creative Director and Illustrator, London College of Fashion, UAL).

The winners, who were announced at a ceremony in the London College of Fashion include: Camila Lopes winning as first place, Camille Perrier Little as second place, and Dave John as third place as well as recognition to Midori Nohara.

Talking about the winning entry Chair of Judges, Rob Philips said, “The overall winners instantly stood out, they did not follow any preconceived ideas of what fashion illustration is, instead they explored their feelings and techniques to convey a fashion drawing which challenges what fashion illustration can and should be.”

We catch up with the winners to see what they have to say. First up, Camila Lopes!
