Referencing flags from around the world, Felipe Oliveira Baptista has abstracted primary blocks and segments of colour and shape to give an impressively strident yet sophisticated take on an activewear aesthetic. It is very appropriate that the brand should retain a certain sporty tune throughout this collection – Lacoste will be the dress of the French Olympians in 2016.

Baptista took inspiration from the 1930s Olympics right through to today’s. Patriotic Stars and Stripes were inevitably brought to the NYFW catwalk, as were snippets of the South African flag, which were confidently and athletically adapted into vibrant designs. These feature prominently alongside those using more muted khakis or soft yellows in combination with a range of elegant greys and whites. During this 90s sportswear revival we appear to be witnessing, Lacoste’s cross-over of graphic prints and flowing fabrics, actually comes across to the viewer as quite unique and contemporary. A far cry from the polo shirts… complete with crocodile.
