Bas Kosters ‘Buydentity’

It’s Men’s Fashion Week, and street style shots are popping up on leading fashion websites. I was flicking trough them to see what’s up and again noticed the odd understated aesthetic of designer clothing, which all men on the pictures seem to wear. The looks seemed quite humourless and rigid in a certain way. Although the outfits were carefully selected by the different individuals, to me they seemed like a uniform; a fashion uniform. Of course we all conform to certain codes within our own groups, but the fashion uniform is a special one. The seeming ‘je ne sais quoi’ is not so spontaneous, and a way to identify each other as someone who matters. The strong codes in this dressing can also make one feel left out, but are looks really the way to judge by?

Consequently, you could conclude if one has the money to buy understated yet cutting-edge designer fashion, which comes at a certain price, one is immediately accepted or important? Could we in that case could call their identity a ‘buydentity’? I must admit that it is sometimes difficult to ignore the automatism of your brain when it scans someone’s looks and links it to certain definitions we cultivated, but it is refreshing to try not to. You might be surprised what you find out.
