Bas Kosters ‘Fur real’

The men’s collections for Autumn / Winter 2015 have been presented and, to my astonishment, I saw a big parade of fur going down the catwalk. As the word ‘catwalk’ comes from the elegant walk of a cat, I would have rather seen the animals walk down that runway alive, but unfortunately they were turned into big coats, hats and embellishments for bags. The collections were screaming loudly: Wear fur – it’s is the latest thing!

Yesterday I heard a radio commercial for a good cause for children. The celebrity presenting, who tried to persuade me to care and give for unprivileged children, was recently nominated as ‘ignorant wearer of fur’ for 2014. Funny how she cares for the needs of children, but not for the needs of animals. Although I don’t want to be the one to say that people can’t wear fur, as people should be able to make up there own minds, fashion labels have, in my opinion, a chance to raise awareness about concerning matters in this world. Showing a collection full of fur is definitely a sign that this chance has been ignored. Someone with the power to inspire, because he is working in an industry that evolves around aesthetics’ should – in my opinion – be thinking about ethics too.

Because wearers of fur often don’t know the stories behind their fur, it’s important they are informed, and you could be the one to tell them. Let’s give these animals a voice!
