Bas Kosters 'I survived the '90s'

Bas Kosters ‘I survived the ’90s’

There was a time when vintage was called ‘second-hand’ and merely cost a few pennies. That time was called the ’90s. Flared trousers, pyjamas, ’60s winter coats and morning robes were amongst my attire. It was the time that bands like Nirvana, Supergrass and Blur wore a very trashy, careless version of ’60s and ’70s dusty granny clothing. What made it so cool was the contradiction between the long greasy hair and matching attitude and the granny-like rags.

Although not every popstar survived those ’90s, this way of dressing did. I was recently watching the men’s collections and spotted the Raf Simons’ show. Wool overcoats with wide collars, turtle necks and lab coats with a grungy raw edge mixed with slacks with sewn on pockets topped off with some careless, dirty hair. To my big surprise, I noticed that it was possible to revive a revived revival. In this case the ’90s revival of late ’60s / ’70s wears. There are so many ways to look at this, but most of all I was surprised that I never noticed a revived revival like this before, although it must have happened. I’m curious to see if in 15 years we can revive Raf’s revival of the ’90s, ’60s / ’70s revival. Maybe the best thing to do is to hold on to your grandpa’s wardrobe for as long as possible.
